I was fourteen years old when the war started. My earliest memory of that period was two of my brothers joining up, one into the air force and the other to the marines. After that, the introduction of rationing and then the Blitz, are other events which stick in my mind.
The first night of the blitz my mother and i stayed at home and hid under the table. However, the second night we all trudged up the Ballygomartin road to the fields and lay under the hedges. We had plenty of laughs up there, like the lady who came with the hat that had a veil on. It was always getting caught in the hedge.
I was sixteen when the Yanks came over, after that it was jitter bugging in the Plaza and the Orpheus where everyone had a brilliant time.
Of course there were sad times too, when friends and relations were killed in battle. Everybody rallied round and helped out best they could.
Everybody's life changed during those war years. I went to work in Mackie's aircraft factory until the war was over.
