I grew up in Manchester during the war, and have recollections of being carried at night and seeing the lights in the sky as the Germans bombed the city. I remember as a small boy playing in the bombed out houses, seeing what we could find.
Towards the end of the war I remember the Americans. They had a large base at Burtonwood, and would come into Manchester to relax. We used to pester them for Gum and sweets, and they would even take us to the pictures. We would offer to pay, but of course they never let us! You wouldn鈥檛 be allowed to do that sort of thing today would you. I particularly remember the chocolate, caramel chocolate or with nuts in. Something you just couldn鈥檛 get here. Talking of things you couldn鈥檛 get, I remember my first banana. Well, I hadn鈥檛 seen one before so how was I to know you had to peel it first!
During the war my dad was in the RAF. He was only base down the road in Preston as he was involved in training the new recruits, he was a marksman, but I still didn鈥檛 see much of him.
My Aunt went back to the States as a 鈥淕I Bride鈥, where she still lives, though I haven鈥檛 been in touch with her recently.
