My wife told me that one day (she was 8 or 9) a German airman had been captured by the locals at S. Ockendon railway station. They were armed with pitch forks, locking him up in the parcel office until the officials arrived to take him away. It must of been very smelly as there was boxes of fish waiting for delivery in the office.
My wifes uncle managed a farm that some of the prisoners of war worked at. One of the prisoners made my wife a ring made of the cockpit glass of a crashed plane, another one made her a silver bracelet.
