Being 14 at the beginning of 1939 I started work. By the July, the source of fleece being used stopped, so my young brother and I went to Leicester.
We returned after a few weeks. Luckily I got a job at the local cigarette factory, Churchmans. There I remained till the war ended.
We all had scary moments with bombs exploding, gunfire noise, etc. In time it became a way of life. We went to local dances, pictures or a drink with friends.
An unexploded huge bomb landed killing some neighbours. When it was made safe the blast knocked my father over, and next doors poor cat was covered in soot. We thought it a highlight to see two Germans in handcuffs after being shot down. Very sad.
My best memory is of a boyfriend returning from the army.
