My story starts in the year 1941
My mother and I had just come out of the empire cinema when we decided to call in the fish shop to get some homemade crisps. Mrs Finch made very good crisps but her chips were mankie. My mother went into the shop while I stayed outside. All of a sudden there was a blue flash in the sky followed by a very loud bang, my mother ran out of the shop and said 鈥渨hat was that鈥 I said I didn鈥檛 know. She said, 鈥淲e must get home as quickly as we can鈥. It was very difficult during wartime as everything was in complete darkness. We made our way home as best we could as my father and younger sister were at home. When we arrived home everything was in a terrible mess, windows blown out, soot from the chimney all over the place, tables and chairs strewn about. My mother shouted, 鈥淛ohn, Mavis, are you alright?鈥 The answer came back from the darkness, 鈥渨e鈥檙e ok! a bit dirty and shocked鈥.
We found out later that a bomb had dropped just behind the houses of Woodland Terrace. Because the houses were in a hollow the blast from the bomb went over the rooftops and our street was very lucky there were no casualties.
Thank god.
