Submitted by Alex Crawford on behalf of Mrs. Giles:

I remember being here on VE Day. Everyone was dancing and singing up through Piccadilly. My father was sailor and he didn't come home until 1946. I had lots of uncles in the war too.

I enjoyed the war. I know I shouldn't say it and it was an awful thing to happen but I was young.

We had very little, but none of us were hungry so we used to get a couple of ounces of everything a week. The sweets weren't even rationed at the beginning, you just couldn't get them. That's why I've still got my teeth I suppose!

We used to go up to wherever my father's ship came in, including Grimsby, and we made friends up there. Week would stay there for a week or two if he was on leave.

I was engaged to chap in the Merchant Navy but we fell out and I didn't marry him til I was 56! It was in the papers! He and I had been married before but we met up again and got married in five weeks.
