A German plane was shot down during a air-raid at night,We were sheltering under a concrete slab!. In the morning before the police arrived my brother and I went to the plane and found bits strewn all over the place, This included a string of German sausages, black ones, I took them home and as far as I can remember we had them for dinner and they were very nice!

Message 1 - A free meal during the rationing

Posted on: 03 June 2005 by Imazad

I was a young teenager in Leicester at the time but cannot be precise about the date.
Rationing was at an extreme low and queing for everything and anything was the order of the day.
One of the few things to go unrationed was the good old Fish & Chips. My mother was a wonderful manager even though money was always in short suppy. Returning from school one day I had to pass the chippy and they were having a delivery from an open lorry packed with ice. The driver lifted a large basket of fish to deliver to the shop and a large fish slipped off. It somehow found it's way under my raincoat and I ran to my home two streets away.
My mother was furious that I had stolen from someone else, but obviously forgave me as it found it's way onto the table for two days.
To rub salt into the wound I had to go and queue for probably an hour for a portion of chips from the same shop.
Had never seen a fish resembling that before nor since, but they say stolen fruit tastes the best and who am I to argue?
