I remember being in an air raid shelter in Grays, Broad Street, Birmingham. I was lying on the floor whilst my mum and aunties sat knitting scarves. My father went away for 4 years from 1040-1944. A land mine dropped outside and left a huge crater. The women were very brave and didn鈥檛 show fear so us children were never frightened. They were always laughing and joking and we never went hungry because we had bread and jam. Everyone was the same and we slept three in a bed.
We had a fire in our house caused by an electrical fault. My mum was at the Co-op doing some shopping and the dog fetched her back to alert her to the fire.
I recognised the noise of the aircraft and remember the early warning noise. I also remember collecting shrapnel.
