I lived in Salisbury during the war and I remember seeing some of the VIPs who visited, people like King Farouk and Princess Maria, they all came to Salisbury.

One day when my brother and I were on our way home from school, the local blacksmith came past us on his bike. He said it was no good us going home for dinner because there was a tank in our house. We didn鈥檛 believe him and ran home only to find a Churchill tank backing out of our house. It had been on manoeuvres, and somehow it had crashed into the house bringing half the house wall down. There is still a definite mark today where the new building work took place.
