After a night of bombing over Stoke Newington, my father, an air raid warden was shepherding all the families who had sheltered overnight opposite the Simpsons, tailoring factory in Stoke Newington. He was careful to guide everyone in the dark early morning round a huge black crater — but when he got near to the edge he realized it was huge bale of suiting cloth that had been blown out of the window of Simpsons.
