This Story was submitted to the people's war website by Katherine from Swavesey Village College on behalf of Joan Hugil, Joan Hugil fully understands then site's terms and conditions.I was 17 when the war broke out, and worked at Rowntrees. Of course, when it started I got a job in Adams Hydraulics, which made 10 pound mortar bombs. They used to have machines that shaped the bombs, and then sent them to a different factory to be filled. I worked in the tool room, and people used to come to me with discs to get the tools. I was very nice working there, we worked in three shifts and it was good.
In my spare time, I used to go out dancing in the town. I loved to dance, and of course at that age we didn't know what to expect as we hadn't been in a war before. We just enjoyed ourselves dancing. There were Barracks nearby, where there were dances at the weekends. There were all sorts of soldiers there: English, American, Canadian and French.
One time I remember I went out to the pub for a drink with a soldier, when the air-raid siren went. I knew the landlady and she said we could go into the front room until the raid was over. After the raid, the soldier walked me home. It turned out that the station had been hit and he had to go and help go and clear it up.
