My Reasearch into ww2.
My reasearch has very kindly been given to me by a very friendly neighbour in her 70's,
She sed
"i can't remember much, i was 10 at the time, living in calderbeck,
the war never really affected us where we were living, but i remember the soldiers used to come and practised on the fells.
We were on rationed which was really difficult to live on, we were such a big family so we had to nake sure everything got shared equally, we had our own hens and pigs to look after.
I remember the young lads going off to war, and young girls going off to land army.
we had some evacuees come live with us for a little while, we had two familys, 1 woman with three children and another with four we used to live in a big house back then so there was alot of us.
Once the familys had gone, we had a german refugee come live with us, he had escaped from germany because he was a jew.
One of the ladies went to foresty and the other one was a cook.
Then we moved to carlisle, i can remember the soldiers coming back wounded into hospital. We soon went to Keighley for a holiday, and the planes would go ove with searchlights.
Then we had the blackout, it wasn't scary for me but it would have been for others, we had to block up the windoes with huge bits of cloth and board them up, we couldn't see out and nobody could see in, the car lights had to have a black metal grid so the lights off the cars were to shine on the floor."
