My Dad was exempt from serving as he worked for the cement works and it was essential for the war effort for rebuilding. He wanted to go in the ground Force and was disappointed. When the war started I was almost 7. The thing I remember was when I was at Junior School we had to go into a brick built shelter during air raids and I learnt how to spell bananas! When air raids got too lairy we stopped going to school and we had to have lessons in houses. In my parents house we had our desk. Other pupils and teachers and some other people in our road let us use their sitting rooms as well.
