My grandad was only nine years old when the war started so he obviously did not go to fight. my great grandad however was called up to go and build fighter planes. My grandad lived in Marsden in Yorkshire. some evacuees came there but they all stayed with friends or family in the town. My grandad's family had no room to take any evacuees in anyway. although my grandad did not go to fight or do anything in the actual war he did see a lot of things first hand such as the Manchester blitz. he said it was so bright that you could read a newspaper outside at night. he was only around 11 miles from the city and it was burning so intensly he could actually see it burning. He also had to indure the food and clothes rationing but said he never went hungry though the clothes were very drab. He saw men off his street going to join either the army or the home guard. he went to a school near to his house and carried a gas mask around where ever he went. the school had an air raid shelter so when the sirens went off they all had to sit in the shelter until the all claer siren went off.
