This story has been submitted to the People's War website by Liz Andrew of the Lancshomeguard on behalf of Con Nicholson and added to the site with her permission.
I was six years old when the War started and I remember my mum having to line all the curtains with blackout material - my mum was not a great sewer - so it was a real job for her.
I remember having to run home if I heard the Sirens and sit under the stairs. I went to primary school at Walverden School in Nelson and to Junior School at Berry Road Juniors - and I recall never going to school without a gasmask.
My Dad was in the Fire Service and was sent to fight the fires in Manchester and Liverpool - they would range for miles. He had some horrific stories. I'd hide under the table and listen in as he told the grown ups. I don't think people realized how badly the cities were being bombed.
