My two brothers and I were evacuated from Liverpool. We were taken on buses from our school to Lime Street Station. We were given a gas mask and labels bearing our names were attached to us. A train took us to a tiny country station, and we were given a bag of goodies to pass on to our carers. We were transferred to the village hall, where we were examined by the doctors and nurses. If we were okay, we were then handed over to the local WVS. Various people arrived to choose from the groups of children. My brothers and I refused to be parted and we stuck it out until the end when we were taken by car to a large house.
We were made very welcome and fed well. They had a maid called Sally. Eventually, we were moved to a farm. Conditions there were very different from anything we had known before, but we were well looked after. We used to have to walk two miles each way to school. When we returned home in September 1943, it was to a completely different Liverpool.
