During the war I was in the office of a firm making camouflage nets (a reserved occupation) which had formerly made binder twine for farmers. I lived with my parents - my brother and sister were evacuated first to Hastings and then Billingshurst.
We didn't have an Anderson shelter as our back garden wasn't big enough so we shared one belonging to neighbours across the road. One night their house was bombed butwe were all safe in the shelter slthough the shelter was filled with debris and dust as the door was blown off. Our house was blasted with all the windows gone which happened fairly frequently. When the siren went we all went across the road followed by our ginger cat, Nobby, who always accompanied us. We didn't have to carry him or call him - he just came along automatically! We were lucky as a family as we all survived.
We lived near the Surrey Docks and when they were bombed early in the war, the fires could be seen from where we lived. My old school was also damaged by inceniary bombs but it survived and is still there - John Evelyn's School.
