This story was submitted to the People's War site by a volunteer (Rachel Irven) from Three Counties Action on behalf of Derek Robinson, and has been added to the site with his permission. Derek Robinson fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

During the War (aged about 10) I was evacuated to Newlyn, near Penzance in Cornwall. Very occasionally German Planes used to fly over on their way home after a raid. In the small harbour in Newlyn there were many fishing boats and also an old barge, partially sunken, which was used to store coal. One of the German planes bombed this barge and blew it up completely.
The next day, ‘Lord Haw Haw’ said on the radio that the Luftwaft had sunk a destroyer in Newlyn harbour.
That gave us all a good laugh!
