I'll never forget my father returning from the war to our home in East Peckham in Kent. I was about nine at the time. He'd been out in Burma, away from home for nearly all the war while we were evacuated to Staffordshire. The date was set for his return, but we didn't know what time it would happen. There was a joyful atmosphere around the place, though.
And then, there he was, pulling up in a taxi. I was over the moon! He took me to school -- it was a great feeling to have MY DAD TAKING ME TO SCHOOL! But there was a distance between us. He wasn't a stranger, but there was this distance. Over the years, I overcame it, though. I had a car, and he didn't, so I was able to take him to watch cricket matches!
