This story was submitted to the People's War site by Pamela Baldwin of the CSV 大象传媒 Coventry and Warwickshire Action Desk on behalf of John and Gerda O'Hagen whose mother was Else Lang and has been added to the site with their permission. I was born in Breslau (now called Wrozlaw, Poland) and I remember the Rissions coming to our town and telling us we had to get out. All the men had gone to war already, so it was just women and children. We had to pack up very quickly and could only take what we could carry or wear. My mother knew that she might be stopped by a Russian soldier and was instructed to hand over her jewelry to him. So she was very clever and sewed some of her jewelry into the hem of her coat!
I still have a small ring of hers.
