My aunt Norma grew up in Sheffield. Excited by the idea of adventure she joined up as soon as she could persuade her mother to let her and became a WAAF. She served in various places, including Biggin Hill, supporting Bomber Command.

It was her to be her last moments of real happiness. Whilst serving she was obliged frequently to sleep in damp cellars and as a result caught TB. It was not diagnosed until she had passed it on to her younger sister and both women spent the next 10 years in Sheffield Sanatorium, experiencing the full horrors of treatment and watching those about dying. Norma only won her release at the total destruction of her health and the collapse of one of her lungs.
