At the time of the doodle-bugs, I had a boyfriend and, because of the difficult times we were living through, some friends of my parents who lived in Sussex invited us to spend a few days with them. I stayed with the friends but my boyfriend was sent to stay with neighbours up the road. No ‘hanky panky’ in those days.
We borrowed bicycles from some neighbours and rode out to ‘High an Over’ on the South Downs where we experienced some extraordinary sights. We watched ‘dogfights’ below us over Seaford. On another occasion, we saw fighters flying in behind the doodle-bugs, getting their wings under the doodle-bug’s wing and lifting it, turning them in a semi-circle and they would fly on away, back over the Channel. This was a very daring spectacle and we knew that was one doodle-bug which wasn’t going to drop on London.
I have recounted this story many times and have never heard of anyone else having witnessed it.
