During the war, my brother and I were evacuated. We were very unhappy, so my mother took us home to Hornchurch; a new home as our house had been bombed. The new house was not far from an aerodrome and my school was close to the aerodrome as well. When the aerodrome started getting bombed by Germans we spent alot of time down in the air raid shelters. This meant we did not get much schooling during that time.
But one day, coming home from school with my friend from next door after a doodlebug raid, we got to the end of our road and saw all the doors and windows blown out in the street. It had landed at the end of our road in a field! My mother had run into her kitchen and hid behind the door. After the screaming noise stopped, one of the kitchen shelves above her came down and hit her on the head and she suffered concussion.
That night we had to go and stay with another family until our mother was feeling better and the house was sorted out.
