We were playing on the banks of the Tyne with my Cousin Ronnie and friends Billy and Russell Hails. We were playing happily when there was a loud sound and we saw a plane speeding up the River Tyne. It was a German plane and there was a Spitfire following it. We all stopped to look at it, before the German plane started firing guns. We could smell a smoky smell that was coming from the plane. We didn鈥檛 know whether it was aiming for us or for the other side of the river, as on the opposite side of the river was Walker Naval yards, Newcastle. However, we did not stay around to find out! We all sprinted as fast as we could up the bank of the river. My cousin, brother and I were fairly slight and we were quite good at sprinting so we were off as fast as our legs could carry us. However Russell was a lot heavier than us and was not the fastest sprinter. We were shouting at him to hurry up, as we sprinted away. We ended up going to Russell鈥檚 house first as it was the closest. We rushed into Russell鈥檚 back yard and waited there for a while, before going home.
