All I remember was being gathered up from school in St. Albans School by Bristol Street where the mosque is now. We used to live in Cheapside. I鈥檇 just started school (about five years old) and we were taken to New Street Station by coach with a gas mask, sandwiches that - was it a little packed lunch handed out. Then we went on a long train journey on a dirty train, sat with other children to South Wales, Caerphilly. Lots of children from a few schools came and we went to the church hall and stood there waiting for someone to choose us to take home and look after us. Most of the children had gone but me and 1 other child were left and I thought I must have been ugly. Eventually someone did come along and picked me up so I left the other child there. A very nice couple,a solicitor and his wife claimed me and I was well looked after, very well.
