It was 1944 and I was 18 and got my papers calling me in the Army. I鈥檇 done a month's training because my height didn't tally with my weight, marching running and all that kind of thing and we had our mess tins and knife and fork in our hands to go to lunch and we heard this buzz bomb stop and when they stop you don't know where they're going to crash, you know So we all got down by our beds and this wretched thing came down in the middle of the allotments. But nobody got hurt. We were very lucky.
