My dad’s dad was a Heavy Rescue Fire Warden and he worked in the East End of London. He would come round sometimes with some little extras which he managed to acquire while working up there — it was mainly offal (kidneys, liver etc).

It was while he was visiting us that he told me that he had had a terrible job the day before pulling people from an underground station (which I was later to learn was Bethnal Green Tube). He said that the terrible thing was that they had died unnecessarily as there had been a false alarm and the people had panicked and as they ran down the station steps someone had fallen over and all the people had trampled the other people to death. He said it was the worst job he had had to do all through the war.
