I was 11 years old when the war started. My mother, sisters and me had to get out of barracks as my father was in the Household Cavalry (Lifegaurds) so we all went to live in the country to our grandparents.
We used to watch the American Flying Fortresses leaving for Germany and we would count them all out and in. It was always very sad when the numbers did not tally.
After 2 years we went back to Feltham in Middlesex but then the blitz started and we spent a lot of time in the shelters in the garden so I was sent back to the countryside as I was ill with my nerves, this was when I was 14/15 years old.
I got a job as a nanny to a two year old boy who's father was ion the Paratroop Regiment but had been killed at Arnham.
When I was 15 I met a niceyoung man who was in the army. He went to France but was killed. He was my first boyfriend.
When I was 16 I went back to Feltham and started work in London. it was 1943 and the flying bombs had started, then we got the buzz bombs.Very frightening.
My father came back from the Middle East in 1945 when the war was over. In 1946 I met my husband whohad just been demobbed from the RAF. He had spent about 4 and a half years in the Midle East.
I hope my family never have to go through a war, I had 2 nervous breakdowns because of it.
I am now 77 years old widow and a great Grandma.
