This is my Grandad's story.
He was only six years old when he was evacuated to Oswaldtwistle with his younger brother. His mother,Amelia, told him that they must stay together when they were housed. At the church hall at Oswaldtwistle, the villagers came to choose children. Many people asked my Grandad if he would like to stay with them, but when he explained that his brother must come too, they soon withdrew their offers. At the end of the day, only my Grandad and his brother were left, and so the vicar and his wife let them stay with them at the vicarage.
The most memorable part of this for my Grandad, is his birthday. On his seventh birthday, the vicar threw him a party and gave him a card. Having grown up in working class Salford, he had never experienced anything like this before, and so it stuck in his mind.
