HMS BELLONA --------------Actions Against Nazi Convoys
Apart from participating in Artic Convoys and "D" Day she was involved in operations against German Shipping off Stavanger in Norway and off St Nazaire Brittany.
STAVANGER
In january1944 Ships of the Home Fleet including Bellona and 3 Destroyers attacked and almost completely destroyed the convoy which consisted of 7 or 8 ships including a large Tanker and 2 Minesweepers off Stavanger
The scene of the battle was illuminated with starshell .A lot of the ships were burning , sinking ,and exploding
The action took place within range of rhe German Shore Batteries .
While our ships were retiring to Scapa Flow enemy Torpedo Bombers attempted to attack but Naval fighter aircraft operating from 2 Escort Carriers broke up the attack Our ships suffered no damage
St NAZAIRE
Later in august 1944 before "D" Day whilst Bellona and her accompanying Destroyers were carrying out their nightly task of blockading the French channel ports they encountered German coastal convoys consisting of nine ships .Seven ships.were destroyed and two were damaged
The German Ships were Minesweepers,Armed Trawlers and Merchantmen and were illuminated wih star shell
The force returned to Plymouth without further incidents
