Jean told us she was in her early twenties when the war broke out. Jean was joined by other World War 2 veterans, who all gave their own input to the interview. Jean had lost her father in the first world war and until recently, had no idea where her beloved father rested. Jean is now partially sighted.
Walter Taylor recounted one of his experiences in the D-Day landings. After landing at the beaches of Gold, he was involved in a tank crisis. The tank blew up, went up in flames and left his face badly burnt. He suffered permanent hair loss. His tank's co-driver wasn't as fortunate as him. He only survived because of sergeant's good advice, to leave the tank escape door unlocked in case of an emergency. Walter and his wife now live in Waterlooville, Portsmouth. They have recently visited many sites of world war 2 historical importance.
Muriel Mabey who is now in a wheelchair brought in a ration book and ID card to show us an example of the cost and allowance of certain daily food and clothes. The interviewees told us of many customs of the war. They told us of how they shared ration books to contribute to weddings. Women who couldn't afford tights drew a black pencil line down the back of their legs!
We enjoyed interviewing these fascinating characters and have gained alot out of it.
