When war broke out I was sixteen and I was serving an engineering apprenticeship at J. Bigwoods, Wolverhampton. We were making heavy machinery for steelworks.
I joined the ARP as a messenger boy and I remember when Coventry was being bombed I was sent to the Rock Hotel where I was on the roof watching the bombs dropping.
Shortly after this I joined the Home Guard attached to the South Staffordshire Regiment. We had to guard Boulton and Pauls(Aerodrome)and the Electricity Power Station at Commercial Road. We worked 12 hour shifts at first but later we had weekends off although we would be called out to the Home Guard on manoeuvres.
