This occurred in the spring of 1940. I was an aeronautical enthusiast and was able to read Flight Weekly. In it was an article regarding self-sealing petrol tanks for Spitfires — a new thing.
My brother lived in London and I sent him a letter telling him about the article. He replied thanking me for the information. Unfortunately his letter was lost — probably when I was on the beach at Worthing where I had been evacuated to. It fell out of my pocket. I heard nothing more until I came back to London. Someone had picked it up, read it and thought he had a devious source. He reported it to police who sent the information to special Branch.
The letter had my brother’s home address on it. When they realised it came from a 14 year old and an aeronautical magazine they decided to take no further action.
O f course at the time with the fall of France they were looking for spies and thought that they had found a local Fifth columnist.
