Mrs Baden was working at Clarkes, a cloth factory in Trowbridge during the war. She was a weaver. One night all the bombers returning from their raid came over Trowbridge and dropped their bombs. Clarkes was hit and the cloths cut right through the middle. It took three weeks to put right and they were all on the dole while repairs were mde. It was very frightening as it was very close to the houses. She remembers one house where the roof was blown off by one of the bombs. They found a baby in a cot in the house. The baby was not frightened - it just looked up and smiled! She remembers how the Air Wardens used to come round and make sure that all their curtains were closed and how they used to shelter under the table or in the cupboard under thestairs when the planes flew over. They had a house on the Longfield estate and she recalls a street party at the junction of Southway with Longfield Road. They had tea out on long tables and held races up and down the street. "People helped each other in those days."
