The bodies from the Whitehall Cinema bombing were taken to the Chapel in Brocklands Park. The first bodies to be removed from Whitehall were taken from there on anything that had wheels - vans, carts, wheelbarrows, prams - everything. Sargeants and Brookers Garage (which was where Rusdens is now) became the mortuary and most of the bodies were taken in there. it filled up very quickly

108 killed, 235 listed as injured. Some were of course, injured and never returned to work. There were evacuees from Croydon who were killed, Soldiers who were in the district etc. A bomb going off like that doesn鈥檛 pick people off, it takes everyone with it.

I just finished my tea and was just about to go upto the Fair in West Hill Fields, when all my windows were blown in. The Fair quietly packed up and went away.

It was the worst day in the history of East Grinstead.
