I went to St. Bridgets School in Limekiln Lane, and was evacuated, along with my brother Frank and all the schools from Liverpool 3. We all went to Chester, and it was a lovely place. We stayed with a family, Mr & Mrs Hewson; they had a daughter, Lucy and a son, George. My brother and I were frightened, after being lined up in a Great Big Hall and people walking around picking different children. Our 鈥榝amily鈥 told us to call them Auntie Ethel and Uncle George and they were kind to us. We had never seen farm animals, like pigs and cows and hens and lambs, but Shock and Horror, we lived next door to a Slaughterhouse. I cried so much, at 17 Queen Street, seeing dead animals, that my Mam brought us home after ten weeks.
Back in Liverpool, we then had the May Blitz and got bombed out, that was a Nightmare. We lost everything, lots of neighbours died, and all the teenagers were dancing in St Bridgets to the song 鈥淟et鈥檚 have another one鈥, they were all killed. Poor Biddy Fitz, was only 14, she was on the landing with people, the planes came down using Machine Guns, and Mrs Zinnet said to Biddy 鈥楢re you OK?鈥 and she just said 鈥楽ee to the injured鈥, then seconds later she fell down the stone steps. When they got to her they she was badly injured and died soon after, she has always been my Hero. Young lads were trying to put out the flames from homes and gas pipes, nobody had electric, it was all gas mantles.
All my brothers are dead now, just two of us left from 13, my sister Molly 93 and me 76. Can鈥檛 write any more now as my eyesight is poor. I鈥檓 housebound now, that is why I am writing about my friend Biddy and all the neighbours from Blackstock Street.
