The family arrived in Hastings for a summer holiday and were disappointed to find the beaches inaccessible because of barbed wire. There were danger signs everywhere as well as warnings about unexploded mines. So the seaside holiday was not a great success.
On this particular day Archie was driving the family along when an officious Dad's Army type Air Raid Warden waved the car down and demanded to see his passport. To this Archie replied "my English one or my German one?" Luckily at that point my grandmother, who was in the back of the car, exploded and said "Archie don't be so stupid, How dare you say something like that".
Probably her intervention saved the day. But nevertheless Archie was asked to drive to some office for further questioning. The warden rode along on the footplate of the car. Archie then stopped the car and asked him to get in as the footplate was not very strong and he had dented it.
Fortunately all was well and there were no repercussions and he got off free.
