In 1942 I was only 4 years old, but I remember going to see the remains of Rudolf Hess鈥檚 plane, Hitler鈥檚 no. 2, which had crashed in the farmer鈥檚 field at Eaglesham, outside Glasgow. My father had heard a plane flying over the house the previous evening, and the noise of it grass-landing a few miles from the house. The next morning he took me on the back of his bicycle to see the wreckage of Hess鈥檚 plane. This was the first plane I had ever seen. The local police arrested Hess. He was trying to make contact with the Duke of Hamilton, and probably trying to keep Britain out of the war. Hess was imprisoned in Berlin where he died.
