I worked in the Leamington Spa Control Room for the National Fire Service (NFS). We worked 48 hours on duty followed by 24 hours off, but we were always on call.
On night when we were on duty on the switchboard, the overhead light seemed too bright to allow my friend and I to go to sleep on the collapsible beds by the switchboard, so we decided to cover the light. We used the cloth that we also used to dust the place - and eventually dozed off.
We woke up to the smell of burning to find the control room on fire !! Of course there was lots of paper around and we panicked. We phone the Officers dormitory which was next door and they came and put the fire out with stirrup pumps.
We weren't put on a charge - but certainly didnt do it again.
