My name is Jessica Brand and I am at Marden High School, North Shields and I am putting this story on behalf of my grandad Jimmy Brand and his brother Alan Brand. They both fully understand the conditions of the website.

We were evacuated in 1941 to escape the Glasgow blitz .I remember being woken up in the middle of the night and being carried out by my older brother to the shelter in the back garden. The shelter was covered in earth and had two long benches inside with cushions on. We sat in the dark and listened to the sound of the explosions. Luckily our house was not damaged that night but later in the war the windows were blown out.
