I was 8 when the war started. I remember going into Vernon Mill in Stockport. A furriers the basement was the raid shelter and the smell was horrible! The currying of the furs.
In 1941-1942 a Wellington bomber was on display near the Town Hall. It was a moral booster for the civilians at home. In National Savings people of Stockport collected the money to buy one for the war effort.
As a boy it was a thrill to see the plane out there. As a child we just didn鈥檛 realise the enormity of the war.
