It was 1943; the Germans were bombing Sheffield almost every night. They would go over Warsop almost every night, drop the bombs then return. At that time we used to have to do 10 days of Potato Picking during the school term.

This particular day, Chippy Roberts, a smallholding Farmer, asked for some lads to pick a field full of potatoes, we were told to bring our buckets as where we were going to pick this field (on Oak Tree Lane) a German Bomber had dropped his bombs as he didn’t get to Sheffield.

It landed in the middle of Chippy’s potato field — we picked the field about a week later and there were not a lot of potatoes left in the field but there were a lot of metal fragments!

Fortunately there was little damage done in Warsop as the Railway Embankment saved us although the blast blew out windows in Shirebrook.
