In 1940 during a German Air Raid on London Docks, we took cover in our Anderson Air Raid Shelter in our back garden.
After we had been there a while we heard voices shouting. My Dad and I got out of the shelter and saw people shouting and throwing stones at the lights around West Ham stadium. These lights were all on, making a lovely landmark for the German planes.
People were bashing on the main gate which was eventually opened by a uniformed security guard who then said ‘what’s the matter me boys’. He was Irish and the people shouted ‘IRA string him up to the lamppost.’ The poor chap slammed the door and switched the lights off. I have never seen a report of this in any war books I have read.
