I was in the ATS for four years during the war.
I was once put on a special course at Strathpeffer for two months and was posted to Newcastle, presumably for some special reason. I landed at Newcastle and nobody knew me or had any notification I was arriving. I was so worried I would be posted as AWOL and terrified what my parents would think when they found out.
After investigation they discovered where I should be, which was on a boat half way to Ireland. I missed that posting so I was posted to Hull. It turned out they had forgot to put ‘Ireland’ after the word Newcastle so it was assumed I should be sent to Newcastle, England so that's where I ended up.
