This story was submitted to the People’s War site by Jean Sharman on behalf of Charlotte Simpson of Aberdeen and has been added to the site with his permission. The author fully understands the site’s terms and conditions.

I was in the ATS for four years during the war.

I was once put on a special course at Strathpeffer for two months and was posted to Newcastle, presumably for some special reason. I landed at Newcastle and nobody knew me or had any notification I was arriving. I was so worried I would be posted as AWOL and terrified what my parents would think when they found out.

After investigation they discovered where I should be, which was on a boat half way to Ireland. I missed that posting so I was posted to Hull. It turned out they had forgot to put ‘Ireland’ after the word Newcastle so it was assumed I should be sent to Newcastle, England so that's where I ended up.
