I will tell you what I remember, you know where the royal Quays are now? Well that was all a big prop yard, from the bottom of Howdon road to the top of Percy Main. We lived at Bridge Road in the middle. I remember being brought out of the shelter to see this whole lot was on fire. The whole lot, you could feel the heat. The whole of the Royal Quays was on fire, the prop yards.
I'll tell you something else I remember as well, same place, at school, I remember looking up and seeing all these aeroplanes. I must have been going to school, and I can still picture them. I think they were mustangs, I can remember the shape of them. From the shape of them and what I have seen on the tele I think they were mustangs. There were a hell of a lot of them. I can picture them now and I am sure they are mustangs, B57s was it? Of course I was only about five at the time.
Something else I remember; there was one night I was in the shelter and of course I wanted a pee, so I'm standing watering the garden looking up at the sky as I pee'd I could see the bombers come over, I was glad when it was all over and I went back in the shelter.
