Crops and love bloom at Ombersley
During The Second World War we lived at Sarah House, Boreley, near Ombersley.
My father was a market gardener and took his produce to Birmingham market nearly
every day. Mother was fully occupied with keeping house and looking after the
family, she employed a maid to assist her.
Father employed Prisoners of War.
Father employed Italian Prisoners of War; they lived at our farm in a shed specially
equipped for them. They worked on Father鈥檚 land and had plenty of fruit and
vegetables at their disposal to supplement their food rations. They made wooden
toys for me in their spare time; they had learned how to create such things using a
small penknife and other very basic tools. I liked these hand made toys, they were
unlike any from the limited range available at toy shops. POW Uniform.
Father also had a German Prisoner of War named August, who told us that he had
shaken hands with Adolph Hitler during the war on the Fuhrer鈥檚 birthday (20th
April). August married a local girl later, who lived at Dough Bank; they lived
together for over thirty years until he retired and moved to Droitwich.
