In 1943 I joined the Birtley Army Cadet Force at the age of 13. My job when the siren went, I had to attend the ARP station at Mitchell Street as a messenger. One night there was a raid. Shrapnel was flying all along Elizabeth Ave. The warden at Mitchell Street sent me to the ARP post at the Coach and Horses with a message. Curious to know, I read what I thought was vital to the raid. But all they wanted to know was if they had plenty fuel for their fire. When I got home and told my mother that was the end of my messenger job.
