I鈥檇 been on night duty and the following morning went to Bond Street for a cup of coffee with a friend. The air raid warning sounded so I thought I鈥檇 better get back to Whitechapel. I hastily got on the number 15 bus and we were travelling down Fleet Street when a bomb fell between my bus and the bus in front of us. My bus turned round and started to make it鈥檚 way down Oxford Street, but turned back again in an attempt to get to Whitechapel. When I got back to the hospital the porters were very surprised to see me. They had been talking to some medical students, who said that I was on the bus behind them and was surely killed. That was one of my great escapes!
