I was very young during the war so I remember things from the perspective of a child under 5 years of age or so. One of those curious things I recall involved the doodle-bugs which used to go over us; usually you would hear them coming over and they would pass where we were. But one day, we were walking, my mother and I, and we heard a doodle bug overhead. But on this particular occasion, the noise stopped and suddenly my mother threw me to the ground and flung herself right over me. I was squashed. I was so startled that I began to struggle to get out form under her but she held firm. And then when the bomb had fallen, fortunately not on us, she let me up. I asked he why she had done that and she explained that she was trying to protect me. But from a child鈥檚 point of view, it was a pretty strange event.
