Just a short one this.
During a night time air raid in Surrey, my grandmother Edith was rushing through Victory Park in Addlestone to get to a shelter. She had both my mother Pauline and two uncles, Raymond and Glyn in tow - who were all small children.
Suddenly, directly above her a barrage balloon exploded into a fireball. Mesmerised, she stood stock still watching it in wonderment, not thinking to get out of the way of the shower of sparks and debris.
Thankfully, neither she or her children were hurt and they made it safely to the shelter. I suppose it must have been a German plane which met a terrible end.
Sleeping in the air raid shelter was not a pleasant experience either - dirt floors and damp and cold. Something she, like thousands of others like her, never forgot!
